Curveball.

In late 1999 an Iraqi engineer arrived in Germany to seek asylum. The man, code-named Curveball, gave the German intelligence service BND detailed information on weapons of mass destruction which Saddam Hussein would have. Just before the start of the war in 2003 UN inspectors visited 11 sites and could not confirm the story of Curveball. Witnesses confirmed that both the CIA and the BND seriously doubted the authenticity of the information. Even though all this U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell used the gained information in his UN speech that laid to the basis for the Iraq war. In februari 2011 Curveball (Rafid Ahmed Alwan al-Janabi) admitted that his stories, including the one that their where 7 trucks as mobile biological weapons factories throughout Iraq and that they could be moved where all fabrications. I highly recommend the Danish DR1 documentary “The Man Who Lied the World Into War” directed by Poul-Erik Heilbuth which provides you with a steel-in-depth investigative journalism of the Danish public broadcaster. Next to that ARD’s TV documentary “Die Lugen vom Dienst”. And Bob Drogin’s book: Curveball: Spies, Lies, and the Con Man Who Caused a War. Colin Powell’s reactions after the news came out: “It has become clear over the years that "the source called Curveball was totally unreliable,” Powell said in a statement to CNN.More. Curveball collected news and commentary at The Guardian60 Minutes Interview.
