History of the Internet

If you’ve ever wondered how the Internet was born, but can’t be bothered reading a whole book on the subject, check out this short animated documentary from graphic designer Melih Bilgil. Entitled History of the internet, it does a great job explaining time-sharing, file-sharing, arpanet and internet. The video uses a new type of info-graphic called PICOL PICOL stands for Pictorial Communication Language, it’s a project that aims to create “a standard and reduced sign system for electronic communication.” The video follows the Internet’s creation from 1957 to 1990. A side note is that the designer only went till the 90’s. And just after the 90’s things on the Internet really started to get interesting with chatrooms, Instant messaging, Peer-to-peer filing, the Dot-com bubble, Search engines, Voice over IP, the Wireless Application Protocol, video-sharing, social networks and basically evolving in from something used largely by universities and the military into a portal for Google, Facebook, Youtube, WordPress, Ebay, Amazon, Wikipedia, Linkedin, Twitter etc. and Porn. Which eventually lead to the fact that today 22% of the Earth’s population is surfin on the Internet regularly. With the most popular websites in 2012 being listed here.
