Meet the enormous ships that carry your stuff.

On January 8th 2015 MSC Oscar (VIMEO), the largest $140m container ship in the world was christened. MSC Oscar is operated by the world’s second-largest shipping company: Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (MSC) (471 vessels operating) (Maersk (Danish) is the largest container ship, operating 600 vessels). MSC Oscar can carry the equivalent to 39,000 cars or more than 120 million pairs of sneakers, and was built by the second largest shipbuilder in the world Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (South Korea). Classed by DNV GL, is 395.4 m long and 59 m wide and was registered in Panama. MSC Oscar has nearly the size of four football fields. Watch how science reporter Joseph Stromberg from Vox(YOUTUBE), a general interest news site, narrates how container ships got so huge and transformed the global economy.
