What exactly is the Higgs boson?

Peter Higgs explains the Higgs boson on the Radio 4 Programme Life Scientific. (Feb 17, 2014). Higgs tries to do it in 120 seconds. The discovery of the Higgs boson will contribute to our understanding of the origin of mass of subatomic particles (NDT). Why was it soo important to create a multi billion dollar device to detect it ? Watch The Hunt for the Higgs: A Horizon Special (2012) hereOn wednesday 4 July 2012, Scientists found the Higgs Boson with a mass of 125-126 GeV at the Cern research centre in Switzerland They found a subatomic particle that could be the Higgs boson. The finding marked a breakthrough in understanding of the fundamental laws that govern our universe.
